What to expect in your first class

Everything you actually need to know before your first Bollywood or fusion dance class at Dance Flow — what to wear, what happens, and what nobody expects of you.

The hardest class you will ever take is the first one, and it has almost nothing to do with dancing. It is the walking-in part. So here is exactly what happens, so that none of it is a surprise.

What to wear

Something you can move in and something you can sweat in. Leggings, joggers, a t-shirt. Trainers with a smooth sole are ideal — you need to be able to pivot, and grippy running shoes fight you on that. Bare feet or socks work for some styles and we will tell you if that applies.

Bring water. You will need more of it than you think.

When to arrive

A few minutes early, so you are not walking in mid warm-up. That is genuinely the only timing that matters.

What actually happens

A warm-up, then the work. Choreography gets taught in layers: the step first, then the timing, then the styling. That order matters — it means there is always a version of the routine that works at your level, and you are never sitting out waiting to catch up.

You will not learn the whole routine on night one. Nobody does. Weekly classes work because they are weekly.

What nobody expects of you

That you can already dance. The most common thing we hear on a first night is “I have no rhythm”, usually from someone who is fine twenty minutes later. There is no audition, no level test, and no back row you get relegated to.

If you are nervous about being the newest person in the room: every single person there has been the newest person in the room.

Still not sure?

Ask. Tell us what you are interested in and roughly where you are at, and we will tell you which class to come to.

Still have a question? Ask the person who teaches the class.
